Theological Foundations: We
are an evangelical congregation in the Reformed tradition. That means that
our modern historical roots go back to the times of M Luther, J Calvin and
others who rediscovered aspects of the Christian faith that led to the
Protestant Reformation. Our ancient roots are in the teachings of Jesus
and the entirety of the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments which we
believe are the inspired words of God, without error and infallible in
what they teach. As
part of the Presbyterian Church of Australia we not only adhere to the
traditional ancient creeds of Christianity but we also adhere closely to
the Westminster Confession of Faith which was commissioned by the English
parliament in the 1640s. Presbyterians were one of the denominations to
adopt this statement as a foundational expression of its understanding of
Christian theology based on the teachings of the Bible. The
Presbyterian Church of Australia was formed in 1901 and its Basis of Union
was that the Supreme Standard of the united church was to
be the Word of God contained in the Scriptures of the Old and New
Testaments and the Subordinate Standard would be the Westminster
Confession of Faith, read in the light of the Declaratory Statement. The
Declaratory Statement seeks to safeguard the church against mis-interpretations
of the Confession and acts as an official commentary to various aspects of
it.
